The proposed chemical treatment approach enhances concentrate volume minimization and water recovery from concentrate. Dissolved solids such as metals, halides, and other constituents, are removed from concentrate as layered double hydroxides with large interlayer spaces. The ions are effectively removed through adsorption/encapsulation in the interlayers. The effluent following the treatment process will have low total dissolved solids and additional water can be recovered by further treating the effluent with a secondary RO process. With the generation of stable end products (solids), this technology provides a cost-effective alternative for concentrate volume minimization. Thus, the technology has high application potential for desalination.
