This project will leverage an existing electrodialysis reversal (EDR) system equipped with novel ceramic ion exchange membranes to achieve > 95% water recovery from an RO brine stream (i.e., RO + enhanced EDR = 99.2% water recovery). Traditional EDR technology has demonstrated water recoveries of > 85% from RO brine streams due to its ability to stably operate at 250-300% above scalant saturation levels. Ceramic ion exchange membranes have been proven at benchscale to operate at > 500% above scalant saturation levels thus enabling even greater water recovery from RO brines at a low energy cost of 3.2 kWh/m3.
